James Bond star Sean Connery has died at the age of 90: “One of the true greats of cinema”

Sean Connery, best known for his portrayal of James Bond, has died at the age of 90, his family said Saturday. The actor, who played 007 in seven films starting with Dr. No. 1962, died in his sleep in the Bahamas. The actor was “ill for some time”, the son of Jason he told the BBC.

Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, Connery has had an acting career spanning decades and has featured in many award-winning performances. He won the Oscar for Best Actor for his work the untouched in 1988 and won three Golden Globes. In his later years, he turned to shows that were almost as iconic. Tribute to Connery

Many pay tribute to the actor online, including the current James Bond, Daniel Craig, who called Connery “one of the true wonders of cinema.”

Also offering condolences was another Bond actor, George Lazenby, who was the first to enter the role after Connery’s huge success. He noted that “Sean Connery as James Bond inspired me personally, but he seems to have trapped an era.”

“Every day on the set with Sean Connery was a lesson in how to act on screen,” said Sam Neill, who co-starred with Connery in the 1990s. The Hunt for Red October. “But all these talents and power – they were completely unique to Sean.”

“I am saddened to learn this morning of the death of Sir Sean Connery,” said Nicholas Sturgeon, Scotland’s first minister. “Our nation today mourns one of its beloved sons.”

Roger Moore, the actor who succeeded Connery as Bond in 1973 Live and let others die, died in 2017.

A Connery spokesman did not respond to a request for comment.
