Q. You said on the pitch that playing Rafa at Roland Garros is the biggest challenge in the sport. Can you explain why? What do you have to do to beat him on Sunday?
NOVAK DJOKOVIC: Well, isn’t it obvious? He has won this tournament many times I do not think any player has won any tournament many times. He has lost twice in his entire career at this stadium. Obviously the conditions are different from what we are used to playing in May and June. I think it could be a better opportunity for me, obviously the ball does not bounce as high on the shoulder as he usually likes.
Yes, I mean, look, regardless of the circumstances, he is still there, he is Rafa, he is in the final and we are playing in clay. The best of the five playing him in the Roland Garros final, I know that. I lost to him on this pitch most of the games we played, but I also won one game in 2015 in consecutive sets in the quarters. This is the fight that I will look back on and obviously I will try to get some positive out of it and use it regularly against it.
I do not feel so exhausted after tonight, obviously almost four hours. It was a great battle. But I feel good. I think a day and a half will be enough time to recover. I’m really looking forward to a big fight with Rafa.
Q. He will take the title of 20th slam. You will go for your 18th. People say it’s probably the biggest fight you’ve ever played. Do you think that maybe more is at stake this time?
NOVAK DJOKOVIC: Grand Slam finals are always huge. This is what you work for all year, every season hoping you can find yourself able to fight for the Grand Slam trophies. But I do not think it is the biggest fight I have ever played in my life. I think there were some bigger ones.
In terms of significance, I mean, if I have to compare, although I do not like it, but maybe the first Wimbledon final I really played against. Wimbledon has always been what I wanted to win as a kid and I dreamed of winning. This is probably what stands out. French Open 2016 with Andy Murray here. Each French Open The final I played was the fight of my life before I won it.
Yes, I mean, it has a specific meaning that I would say makes a difference when I play in the French Open finals in any other final slam. This is what I won the least, so of course I am very motivated to try to get my hands on another trophy.
