County Sheriff Fairfax Tyler Timberlake faces three different charges of assault and battery for an incident involving teasing and arresting a black man.
A camera footage released by the department shows the officer violating the use of force, the authorities said on Saturday.
Timberlake, an eight-year-old veteran of the force, faces up to 36 months in prison, said Steve T. Descano, a lawyer for Fairfax County.
The unknown victim in the video was treated at a local hospital and released, Fairfax County Police Chief Edwin C. Roessler Jr. said, adding that he had personally reached out to the victim and his mother to “express” himself. [his] disgust with me [his] unacceptable criminal actions of the officer and assured that her justice will be justified. “
Roessler said Timberlake was relieved of his duties and the law enforcement authority under Fairfax County staffing regulations. The other officers on the scene have been relieved of their duties pending the results of both criminal and administrative investigations, according to Roessler.
CNN’s efforts to reach Timberlake were not immediately successful.
Descano described the video of the camera as “disturbing.” “I want our community to know that we are pursuing categories that are in line with applicable law and supported by the evidence with which they were presented to us,” he said.
The video of the camera was released by Chief Roessler, who said the video showed officer Timberlake committing “criminal acts that violate the oath of power and ignore the sanctity of human life.” The video also erodes the public’s trust in police, not only in Fairfax County, but around the world. “
Roessler also said that in addition to the criminal investigation, an administrative investigation had been launched and that the use of force by the officer would be subject to independent scrutiny by the Fairfax County Sheriff’s Office.
