ARLINGTON, Texas – Duck Prescott was hospitalized with a serious ankle injury against the New York Giants on Sunday that forced him to leave the game in a basket and with tears.
Prescott injured with 6:33 to play in the third quarter, while faced by the Giants defense Logan Ryan after a run of 9 yards. Prescott’s ankle seemed to shift as he waited for help from medical staff.
The AT&T Stadium fell silent as Prescott was examined by Cowboys medical staff for several minutes before leaving the basket.
Players from both teams, as well as former Cowboys coach and Giants co-ordinator Jason Garrett, comforted Prescott as he left for great joy. He raised his right hand in recognition.
Owner and general manager Jerry Jones appeared to be standing in his suite, but appeared to be heading to the locker room to check on the quarterback.
In 2018, Dallas receiver Allen Hurns suffered an ankle injury in a playoff game against the Seattle Seahawks, not far from where Prescott was injured.
Prescott started with a record at the beginning of the season with three consecutive games for passing 450 yards. He entered the week with 1,690 passing yards, a better league and the biggest of a quarterback Cowboys through four games in team history.
While Prescott’s immediate concern is healthy, the quarterback’s future is also part of the equation.
He plays on a $ 31.4 million one-year franchise label, as he and the team could not reach an agreement on a long-term deal. The Cowboys offered Prescott a five-year deal worth $ 34.5 million per season and more than $ 100 million guaranteed, but he chose to play on the label this season hoping for more commitment.
Prescott was extremely resilient in his career. He had not lost a start (69) in his career and lost only two moments this season, as he was evaluating for a possible concussion against the Atlanta Falcons. He played the last two games of last season with a right shoulder injury that limited his mobility.
According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Prescott’s 69 consecutive starts are the sixth longest run since the start of a rookie season since the merger. Only Tom Brady and Russell Wilson have won more games than Prescott’s 41 since 2016.
The Cowboys signed Dalton as a free agent in a $ 3 million deal guaranteed and up to $ 7 million after nine years as the Cincinnati Bengals quarterback. Dalton took the Bengals to the playoffs four times, but could not win a game after the season.
The last time the Cowboys lost the quarterback franchise due to injury in the game came in 2015, when Tony Romo suffered a repeat of his right-hand collar against the Carolina Panther on November 26, 2015 against the Carolina Panther. Romo suffered the initial break in a Week 2 win over the Philadelphia Eagles.
The Cowboys finished that season 4-12, starting with four different quarterbacks – Romo, Brandon Weeden, Matt Cassel and Kellen Moore.
Romo was in the national invitation for CBS for Sunday’s game.
