Brazil coronavirus: Judge orders Bolsonaro to wear a face mask in public

Brazilian President Bolsonaro has ordered a federal judge to wear a face mask in public

Federal Judge Renato Borelli issued a ruling Monday, saying Bolsonaro must wear a mask when circulating publicly in Brazil. The judge’s order said non-compliance could potentially result in a fine of about $ 386 a day.

The decision applies to all civil servants in the Federal District, where the Brazilian capital is located.

Asked for comment on Tuesday, Bolsonaro’s office referred CNN to the Attorney General, who said his office was “investigating all appropriate measures to overturn the order.”

The Federal District Government issued a decree on April 30, making the use of face masks in public mandatory in an attempt to limiting the spread of coronavirus,,

Since then, Bolsonaro has appeared in public at several events without wearing a mask, including at rallies with supporters.

“Following the example of the President of Brazil, everything is more difficult for us,” said Sao Paulo Governor Joao Doria. Isa Soares on CNN last month. “He goes out without masks. Wrong behavior and wrong indication. This is very sad for Brazil and makes everything more difficult for the governors of the states of Brazil.”

So far, more than 1.1 million cases and more than 51,000 deaths have been confirmed by Brazilian health authorities, and the crisis shows no signs of dropping out.
